Overview of Wood Chipper Course:
This course will run for the duration of 1 day in class and will consist of theory and practical with a qualified and experienced trainer and assessor.
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a hand-fed or machine-fed mobile chipping or mulching unit to chip or mulch timber refuse such as branches and other timber waste. The unit applies to individuals who operate mobile chippers/mulchers as part of arboriculture, forestry, agriculture, conservation and land management, local government, emergency services and other government agency operations. All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Pre-Requisites for Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher:
There are no entry requirements for the wood chipper course.
Personal Requirements
- Have photographic identification (ID);
- Be 16 years of age or above;
- Have a basic level of physical fitness;
- Have your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Long trousers and long-sleeved high vis clothing, safety boots.
- LT Training will provide a safety helmet with earmuffs and a visor, gloves, hearing plugs, safety glasses, and other PPE as needed.

Wood Chipper Course Locations:
Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher is conducted in a classroom (face to face), and practical training is conducted at the LT Training facilities:
- Wood chipper course in Sunshine Coast – Nambour facility at Youth Ave, PCYC Nambour, QLD, 4560
- Wood chipper course in South Brisbane – Redland Bay – 882 German Church Rd, Redland Bay QLD 4165
- Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted on-site at industry clients’ premises, provided suitable facilities are available. We need a minimum of four people for industry on-site training. We can do call-outs all over Queensland and often go to New South Wales. There will be a travel fee of 95 cents/km plus an accommodation fee, if needed, of up to $300/night, which includes the Trainer’s meals. Courses organised on a weekend may require a minimum of six students, plus the above travel and accommodation. LT Training reserves the right to negotiate these fees prior to scheduling a course. The client must agree on the price before the course is scheduled for on-site delivery.

Q. Is training or a qualification required to operate a wood chipper?
A. For your insurance and duty of care, yes, you do. While highly effective, they are also powerful machines and one of the most dangerous in the industry. For this reason, proper training is crucial.
Who should do the course:
The primary target group consists of employed individuals seeking to operate a mobile wood chipper/mulcher in their workplace who have not yet completed FWPHAR2208, Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher.
The secondary group consists of employers who carry out their Duty of Care and follow legislation to train their employees.
Pathways from the Wood Chipper course:
After successfully achieving FWPHAR2208 Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher, participants could progress to complete other standalone units like AHCMOM213 Operate and maintain chainsaws, AHCPCM205 Fell small trees, and FWPCOT3301 Trim trees using a pole saw
RPL:
LT Training does not offer RPL at this point due to the high-risk work activity and changing legislation.
